When Bhat Kerela arrived in the local markets, you knew the rains had truly settled in. Small, spiny, and a deep monsoon green, it found its way into everyday lunches — sometimes as a simple bhaji, sometimes mashed into pitika with a dash of raw mustard oil, and on days when there was a little more time, gently steamed in pungent mustard paste as Vapot Diya, or stuffed and fried into crisp bor that disappeared from the plate almost as soon as they were served.
